Who needs a Dubai visa?
It depends on your passport. The UAE groups nationalities into three categories: visa-free entry, visa on arrival, and pre-arranged visa required.
Citizens of GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman) do not need a visa at all. They can enter with just a national ID card or passport.
Citizens of countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Singapore, and most EU nations receive a free visa on arrival. No advance application needed.

If your country is not on the visa-free or visa-on-arrival list, you must apply for a tourist visa before you travel. This applies to most travelers from South Asia, Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia.
If you are unsure whether your nationality qualifies for visa-free travel to other destinations, check our visa-free countries guide by passport for a similar breakdown.

Visa on Arrival: 30 Days vs 90 Days
Not all visa-on-arrival stays are the same. The duration depends on your nationality.
30-day visa on arrival (free): Issued to passport holders from countries such as India (with qualifying conditions), Maldives, Uganda, and several others. This visa includes a 10-day grace period for extension.
90-day visa on arrival (free, multiple entry): Issued to passport holders from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Brazil, Singapore, and most European countries. Valid for 6 months from the date of issue, with a total stay of 90 days within a 180-day period.

180-day visa on arrival: Currently available to Mexican passport holders. Valid for 6 months, with up to 180 days of stay.
💡 Tip: Even if you get a visa on arrival, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
For Indian nationals, a special rule applies. Eligible Indians holding a valid US visa, green card, UK residence permit, or EU residence card can get a 14-day visa on arrival for AED 100 (approximately USD 27). This can be extended once for another 14 days for AED 250.

Types of Dubai Tourist Visas
If you need a pre-arranged visa, the UAE offers several options based on how long you plan to stay and how many times you need to enter.
30-day single entry tourist visa. One visit, up to 30 days. The most common option for short holiday trips. Can be extended twice, each for an additional 30 days without leaving the country.
60-day single entry tourist visa. One visit, up to 60 days. Useful for longer stays.
90-day long-term tourist visa. For extended visits, business exploration, or family stays.
Multiple entry visa (30 or 60 days). Allows multiple entries and exits during the validity window. Good for regional travelers.
5-year multiple entry tourist visa. Allows stays of up to 90 days per visit. Does not require a local sponsor. Applicants must show a bank balance of at least USD 4,000 for six months. Passport must be valid for more than two years.

How Much Does a Dubai Visa Cost?
Visa fees depend on the type, duration, and whether you apply through a government channel, airline, or travel agency. Agencies typically add service fees on top of the government base fee.
Here are the official GDRFA Dubai fees:
- 30-day single entry tourist visa: AED 200 (approximately USD 55)
- 60-day single entry tourist visa: AED 300 (approximately USD 82)
- 90-day long-term tourist visa (multiple entry): AED 1,740 (approximately USD 474)
- 96-hour transit visa: AED 50
A 5% VAT applies to all base visa fees. Applications made from inside the UAE incur an additional AED 500 processing fee, plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham.

When applying through airlines like Emirates or flydubai, or through travel agencies, expect to pay AED 380 to AED 1,200+ depending on duration and entry type. These prices include service fees.
💡 Tip: Compare prices between the GDRFA portal, your airline, and a licensed travel agency before applying. The same visa can cost very different amounts.
Some visa types also require a refundable security deposit. The 5-year multiple entry visa, for example, requires a deposit of up to AED 3,000 that is returned after you exit the UAE.
If you are also budgeting for a Schengen visa, note that those fees are structured differently.
Documents Required
The exact document list depends on the visa type and the channel you apply through. But the standard requirements for a Dubai tourist visa are:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months validity from your date of travel
- Colour scan of the passport bio page
- Recent passport-sized photo with a white background
- Confirmed return flight ticket (for some visa types)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host details)
- Travel medical insurance (required for most visa categories)
Some nationalities need additional documents. Iraq, Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan nationals must also provide a copy of their national identity card. Source: GDRFA Dubai.
Handwritten passports are not accepted. Only machine-readable passports qualify.
If you are visiting family or friends and they are sponsoring your visa, you may also need a copy of the sponsor’s UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.

How to Apply for a Dubai Visa in 2026
There are four main channels for applying.
1. Through an airline. Emirates and flydubai both offer online visa services. After booking your flight, you can apply directly through their website under “Manage your booking.” The visa arrives by email. Source: Emirates Visa Service.
2. Through a licensed travel agency in Dubai. Share your documents and the agency applies on your behalf. Fees vary by agency.
3. Through a hotel in the UAE. Some hotels process visa applications for guests who have confirmed bookings.
💡 Tip: Only use licensed agencies and official airline portals. Fraud in visa processing is common with unverified third parties.
4. Through the GDRFA Dubai portal or ICP Smart Services. If you have a sponsor in the UAE, they can apply through the official government system. Applications are submitted digitally and processed in approximately 2 to 3 business days.
UAE embassies and consulates abroad do not typically process tourist visas for ordinary passport holders. The UAE Embassy in Washington confirms this directly: tourist visas are processed inside the UAE through sponsors, airlines, or agencies. Source: UAE Embassy.
If you are comparing the Dubai process to applying for a US visit visa, the main difference is that the UAE does not require an embassy interview for tourist visas.
Processing Time
Most Dubai tourist visas are processed within 2 to 4 business days. Some urgent applications can be processed faster for an additional fee.
The 96-hour transit visa, applied through the airline, is typically processed within 24 hours.
Processing times can vary during peak travel seasons (December to January, and Eid holidays). Apply at least one week before your planned travel date to allow for any delays.
All pre-arranged visas are valid for 60 days from the date of issue. You must enter the UAE within that window. The 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas are valid for 30 days from issue.

Can You Extend Your Dubai Visa?
Yes. Most 30-day tourist visas can be extended twice. Each extension allows an additional 30 days without leaving the UAE.
The extension fee is approximately AED 600 plus 5% VAT per extension. Apply before your current visa expires to avoid overstay fines.
Since December 2025, extensions can be done fully online through the ICP portal.

💡 Tip: Set a calendar reminder 5 days before your visa expires. Overstay fines are AED 50 to AED 100 per day, plus an AED 200 out-pass fee.

Overstay Fines
Overstaying your visa in the UAE is taken seriously. Fines accumulate daily and must be paid before you can leave.
The current penalty structure is approximately AED 50 to AED 100 per day of overstay, plus an AED 200 administrative fee for an out-pass. If the overstay is under 30 days, you can pay at Dubai airports while exiting. Longer overstays must be settled at GDRFA headquarters.

Extended overstays can lead to detention and a ban on re-entering the UAE. Do not ignore the expiry date.
Common Reasons for Visa Rejection
Dubai visa applications are generally straightforward, but rejections do happen. Common reasons include:
- Incomplete or unclear passport scans
- Passport validity less than 6 months
- Mismatched names or details across documents
- Insufficient financial proof for the 5-year visa
- Previous overstay or immigration violation in the UAE or another GCC country
- Applying through an unlicensed or fraudulent agency
If your application is rejected, you are usually not given a detailed reason. You can reapply after correcting the issue.

💡 Tip: Download the UAE’s official “UAEPASS” app before your trip. It is used for several government services and can speed up processes.
Currency. The UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the US dollar at approximately 3.67 AED per 1 USD. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Weather. The best time to visit Dubai is November to March when temperatures are pleasant (20°C to 30°C). Summer months (June to September) regularly exceed 45°C with high humidity.
